Please book directly through Globe Trottersour trusted boutique equestrian travel agents and administrator for this fabulous Glenorchy back country 5-days, 4-night trek.

With five days of unrestricted hours in the saddle, this ride has it all – from exhilarating canters through untouched land, swimming horses through glacial fed streams, wandering through native beech forest, ride amongst the snow capped mountain ranges and explore the fantasy based landscapes that have inspired some of New Zealand’s biggest Hollywood blockbuster films.

High Country Horses have exclusive access to some of Glenorchy’s most Iconic scenery, stretching over 100,000 acres of pristine back country, from the Dart Valley, Paradise through to the Rees Valley with Mount Alfred sitting in the middle.

Day One, guests will stay at Rees Valley Station’s shearer’s quarters on day one. Rees Valley Station is a 37,000 acre working Merino sheep, and Hereford beef station that borders World Heritage listed Mt Aspiring National Park.

On Day Two and Three, we explore the Rees Valley with its glacial fed rivers and wild, untamed beauty. Accommodation is beside Arthurs Creek Musterer’s Hut, where it’s back country camping at its best. Think waterfalls, starry nights and silence.

On Day Four, cruise through enchanted landscapes made world-famous from blockbuster movies like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Mission Impossible and The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. The last night is at Miller’s House, a historic, bespoke guest house set within Paradise (quite literally)!

Day Five, the final day of your riding holiday where you’ll venture from Paradise through the mouth of Lake Diamond and ascend the southern side of Mount Alfred. At the top of the track you’ll be able to take a moment and contemplate where and what you have just experienced in the last few days. As far as the eye can see and further is where you have traversed from your sure-footed station horse. Your ride will pass the Dart Bride featured in the recent NZ drama One Lane Bridge before heading back to base for a welcome cold drink.

The Glenorchy Back Country ride typifies everything we love about New Zealand.

All you need to do is get yourself to Queenstown, in the South Island of New Zealand and we’ll take care of the rest!

Tales from the road: "If I could sum up the Glenorchy Back Country Ride in one word it would be EPIC. Our guides were tops. Max was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and the history, the horses and always had our safety as her first priority.  Riding through the beech forests and glacial rivers of Middle Earth, telling tales around campfires in the shadow of snow-capped mountains and cantering through pristine valleys this ride was everything a horsey holiday should be and more!" - What an amazing adventure you have had on our Glenorchy Ride in New Zealand! Tales from the Road: ‘What an amazing place to take a ride! The scenery is spectacular and varied – we rode through native beech forests, around mountains, across glacier feed streams, through grassy river flats and up hills with snow-capped mountains the backdrop all the way. My horse, Gizzy, was a little beauty who was willing to go anywhere and do anything. We had the best week including an amazing swim in the river and a beautiful long canter up a grassy slope together. Our guides Bijmin, Jess and Casey were fantastic – they had amazing knowledge of horses, riding, Maori culture and New Zealand. The trip was really well put together from pick up to drop off in Queenstown – the combination of accommodation and camping, plenty of food, and each day was different. I highly recommend this trip. Loved it!’ - Claire Brown was blown away by the Glenorchy Back Country Ride in New Zealand!

Tales from the road: "From the rainforest to the mountains and those majestic waterfalls flowing from the amazing Glaciers, the Glenorchy High Country surrounds were stunning in their diversity. Being embraced by so many soothing sides of nature every waking moment of our days gave me such joy and peace. So many magic moments are framed in my mind for always. My ride Gamble, little but so brave, youthful and with the kindest soul, she just made this adventure the best ever. I left some of my heart behind with Gamble and hoped she enjoyed my company as much as I did hers every day." - Wow what a wonderful testimonial about the Glenorchy Back Country Ride from globetrotter Shaunna Kelly!

Tales from the road: "My trek through the Glenorchy High country will be one I will never forget. Globetrotting provided a highly organised, safe and unforgettable experience for those wanting to view the exceptional scenery from horseback. Deana, Duayne and their experienced guides made all this possible with their expert knowledge and horsemanship. Nothing was too much trouble, from delivering the cold bottles of wine to replacing the forgotten lip balm. My horse Buddy was a total gentleman, guiding me through some rugged terrain without any trouble at all. Many thanks to Globetrotting for providing this most wonderful experience. One to tick off the bucket list!" - You are most welcome Lisa Pritt-Gordon, stoked you had such a great time!

Tales to Inspire: 'The Glenorchy ride was fantastic! The horses, accommodation, food and guides are amazing. Not to mention the scenery. I rode Cashout and he was a complete sweetheart. He was surefooted, respectful and happy to break from the group when asked. His canter was lovely, too. I was also lucky enough to ride JT for a day and he was super. Our guides worked so hard to have everything ready and perfect for us and their level of horsemanship was beyond what I had expected. They were very skilled in communicating with each and every one of us.
This trip was great value for money, as it's hard to put a price on my level of enjoyment and that spectacular scenery. Well worth it!'
- Jan Garrett absolutely loved the Glenorchy Back Country Ride in New Zealand's South Island!
Tales to Inspire: 'This is the first long ride I've done, and the first Globetrotting ride, but it won't be the last. The whole experience was terrific, and excellent value for money. I really loved the last night at Paradise. Our guides, Jess and Bijmin, were exceptional, and I couldn't believe how well Casey matched horses with riders. I rode JT and he was fabulous. I like a horse with a bit of 'go', so he was just right for me. I would definitely recommend this ride!'
- First-time globetrotter Anne Coombs was thrilled with the Glenorchy Back Country Ride in New Zealand!
